My worst fear
It was the last period of class for the day, I was 14 and I have been battling with stress and anxiety; trying to fit in with friend groups, struggling to cope with a divorce in the family and to top it off I was in the early stage of my acne era. As you can imagine, it was not all ‘going to plan’.
There I was in year 8 history class, about to give my speech in front of the group on the medieval period. “Jordan, you’re up next”, I get a little nervous hearing my name called, but as I walk closer to the front of the class I begin to slowly relax after spending the entire lesson mentally rehearsing my opening lines. I turn to the class and take a deep breath in and then… oh no, it’s started happening.
My face twitch. My biggest fear has started to happen. This wasn’t just a small twitch, but a full contortion of the face from mouth to eye brow. It was something I dealt with on a daily basis. And in front of my peers, it shows its full form. My confidence was at a low and my insecurity levels were at their highest. This is only going to hurt…
I don’t know really why I had a twitch; I can only put it down to teenage insecurity and the fact I had so much stress and anxiety in my life at that point that I didn’t know what to do with it except let my face express it. Also the fact I have so many undiagnosed ADHD symptoms, I have no idea what I’m doing. But this in essence it is, teenage insecurity.
Understanding teenage insecurity
Teenage insecurity is a complex issue that can stem from a variety of factors. According to Beyond Blue, One in seven young people aged 4 to 17 years experience a mental health condition in any given year and almost one-fifth of all young people aged 11 to 17 years experience high or very high levels of psychological distress. Understandably, adolescence is a time of immense change, both physically and emotionally, which can leave teenagers feeling unsure of themselves. The societal pressures to conform and fit in can exacerbate these feelings of teenage insecurity. The comparison to peers, the need for social acceptance, and the fear of rejection can all contribute to a teenager’s sense of self-doubt.
Additionally, teenagers may experience insecurity due to academic pressures. The expectations to perform well in school, meet parental expectations, and compete with classmates can create a constant sense of anxiety and self-doubt. The fear of failure and the pressure to succeed can take a toll on a teenager’s self-confidence.
It is important for parents, educators, and teenagers themselves to recognise and address these underlying causes of teenage insecurity. By understanding the root causes, we can take targeted steps towards building resilience and self-confidence.
The impact of teenage insecurity on mental health
Teenage insecurity can have a significant impact on mental health. When teenagers constantly doubt their abilities and feel insecure, it can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The negative thoughts and self-perceptions can become ingrained, affecting their overall well-being and ability to navigate life effectively.
This is why it is crucial to address teenage insecurity early on. By providing the necessary support and tools, we can help teenagers develop a strong foundation of self-confidence and resilience, thereby improving their mental health and overall quality of life.
Building resilience in teenagers
Building resilience is a key component in helping teenagers overcome insecurity. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges, setbacks, and adversity. By developing resilience, teenagers can cultivate the inner strength needed to face life’s difficulties with confidence.
One effective strategy for building resilience is encouraging teenagers to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. It is important for teenagers to understand that setbacks and mistakes are a natural part of life, and that they should not define their worth or abilities. By reframing failure as a stepping stone to growth, teenagers can develop a more resilient mindset. I’m sure this is obvious to you, but how often do you encourage yourself to do the same, to set the example.
Additionally, fostering a growth mindset is crucial in building resilience. Encouraging teenagers to believe in their ability to learn and improve can empower them to take on challenges and persevere in the face of adversity. By emphasising effort and progress rather than solely focusing on outcomes, we can help teenagers develop resilience and a strong sense of self.
Promoting self-confidence in teenagers
Self-confidence is a vital aspect of overcoming teenage insecurity. When teenagers believe in themselves and their abilities, they are more likely to take risks, embrace challenges, and pursue their goals. Promoting self-confidence involves helping teenagers recognize their strengths and unique qualities.
One effective strategy for promoting self-confidence is encouraging teenagers to engage in activities they enjoy and excel at. When teenagers are able to showcase their talents and passions, it boosts their self-esteem and provides them with a sense of accomplishment. By supporting and nurturing their interests, we can help teenagers develop a strong sense of self-confidence.
Moreover, it is important to encourage teenagers to set realistic goals and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. By recognising and acknowledging their progress, we can instil a sense of self-worth and confidence in teenagers.
Effective communication strategies for parents and guardians
Open and effective communication plays a crucial role in helping teenagers overcome insecurity. Parents and guardians should create a safe and non-judgmental space for teenagers to express their thoughts and emotions. By actively listening and validating their experiences, parents can help teenagers feel understood and supported.
It is important for parents to avoid overly critical or negative language when communicating with teenagers. Instead, using positive reinforcement and constructive feedback can help build their confidence and self-esteem. Encouraging open dialogue and honest conversations can also help teenagers develop effective communication skills, which will benefit them in various aspects of their lives.
I believe one of the reasons I take so many risks nowadays are in the fact that my parents always supported me through all my bad decisions and impulses. Allowing me to learn the lesson the hard way at times but most importantly allowing myself to live with a sense of independence.
Encouraging positive self-talk and self-reflection
Positive self-talk is an essential tool in combating teenage insecurity. Encouraging teenagers to challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive affirmations can help shift their mindset towards self-compassion and self-belief. By practicing positive self-talk, teenagers can reframe their self-perceptions and build a more positive and confident outlook.
In addition, promoting self-reflection can help teenagers gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their emotions. Encouraging them to journal, meditate, or engage in other self-reflective activities can facilitate personal growth and self-awareness. By fostering a habit of self-reflection, teenagers can develop a stronger sense of identity and self-confidence.
Providing a supportive and nurturing environment
Creating a supportive and nurturing environment is essential in helping teenagers overcome insecurity. Parents, educators, and peers all play a role in shaping a teenager’s self-perception and confidence. It is important to cultivate an environment that encourages open communication, empathy, and acceptance.
Parents and educators should provide consistent emotional support and validation to teenagers. By acknowledging their feelings and experiences, teenagers feel heard and understood, which boosts their confidence. Creating a safe space where teenagers can express themselves without fear of judgment or ridicule is crucial in building their self-confidence.
Seeking professional help when needed
In some cases, teenage insecurity may require professional intervention. If a teenager’s insecurity is significantly impacting their daily life, mental health, or overall well-being, it may be necessary to seek help. We have a specific program at Full Tribe Fitness that is dedicated to building confidence and happiness in teenagers’ lives.
In most cases, it’s about someone showing guidance and holding them accountable to move more, eat better and learn how to create mental resiliency for a better life.
In some cases, a clinical psychologist is a good avenue to go down. As my mum was a clinical psychologist who continues to work with adolescence, I can speak from first hand experience.
It is important for parents and guardians to recognise when their efforts alone are not enough and to seek professional help when needed. By working with trained professionals, teenagers can receive specialised support and develop effective coping mechanisms to navigate their insecurities.
Empowering teenagers through extracurricular activities
Engaging in extracurricular activities can be a powerful tool in building resilience and self-confidence in teenagers. Whether it is joining a sports team, participating in theatre, or pursuing a hobby, extracurricular activities provide opportunities for teenagers to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build meaningful relationships.
By participating in these activities, teenagers can gain a sense of belonging and accomplishment, which helps boost their self-confidence. Through teamwork, goal-setting, and overcoming challenges, teenagers develop resilience and a stronger sense of self.
